This page of the site deals with my Personal Self.
It is represented by Water because the human body is comprised of mostly (75%) water.
I am a 37 year old mother to my 5 year old daughter, Maryam. I was born in the "Crescent City" aka New Orleans . We were displaced by Hurricane Katrina but we've returned the city we love!
Since before Maryam was born, I have wanted to homeschool her. I have a degree in Education and I taught in the public schools for many years. However, without an Education degree, I am the first and best teacher of my offspring. Who knows our youth better than their parents?
We have been homeschooling since Maryam was born using the "unschooling" method. This method basically uses the child's interests and "teachable moments" as the basis of their learning. Teachable moments are opportunities for learning that usually begin with a question by the child. For example, once I was playing some Reggae music while on the computer. My five year old niece asked what type of music that was and I answered, Reggae. I told her that it comes from the island of Jamaica. She then asked what an island was. After I showed her a map of the world I pointed out where Jamaica was located. I then showed her the continent of Afrika and pointed to the island, Madagascar, which was her favorite movie at the time. I explained that an island is a piece of land completely surrounded by water. This can go on and on introducing things the youth are familiar with and tying in new information. Research shows that when learning is intrinsic or self-motivated, the information is retained better. Unschooling is also called real life learning because a child learns things that are relevant to his/her everyday life as opposed to being taught subjects in school that may not be relevant to that child's life at the time and much of the subject matter is taught out of context .
We are currently homeschooling full time and we have created a homeschool summer camp where Maryam particiates in all types of activities such as Swimming, Afrikan dance, arts and crafts, as well as the Children's Museum and other activities. I work full time at home as a homeschooling mom, I sell my baked treats and handmade crafts. I am also a freelance newspaper editor and I'm currently writing my first book on Homeschooling.
Basically, I am a devoted mother who homeschools my daughter and I operate a home business. Information about my business is on the Marketplace page. Purchase sale items on the Web Store page. Many of my "Brothas & Sistahs in Business" webpages are featured on the Links page.
